FLWT is thrilled to bring
Derek Weidman, one of the most innovative voices in contemporary woodturning, to Rochester this October for two unique events. Known internationally for his groundbreaking
multi-axis turning, Derek treats the lathe as a sculptor’s tool — carving animals and figures with arcs, curves, and circular cuts, then enhancing them with carving, textures, and bold surface work.
Born in 1982 and based in rural Pennsylvania, Derek brings a sculptor’s imagination to the lathe. Drawing on his background in philosophy and inspired by his father, a bird carver, Derek pioneered a unique form of multi-axis turning blended with techniques like German ring turning.
For him, the lathe becomes a lens — a way to see and shape the world differently. His “circular zoo” of animals and figures reflects a visual language born from arcs, curves, and turning cuts, pushing the boundaries of what woodturning can express.
Whether you're a seasoned turner or just curious, Saturday’s demo and the Sunday/Monday hands-on workshop offer a rare chance to experience (and try) his art in motion.
